The future of SMB networking is bright but challenging. The challenges stem from the growing maturity of networking technologies and the pervasiveness of network installations. Maturing technologies imply that the baggage of their youthful incarnations is often still found at SMB sites and must be dealt with. The spectrum of the networking equipment capabilities, software, and standards versions continues to widen. Compatibility and interoperability challenges follow. Maturing technologies also imply an increasingly crowded and competitive vendor marketplace, while the pervasiveness of network installations implies that widespread changes to the network infrastructure could be very disruptive.
