In the consumer Internet access space, the big speed breakthrough happened with the introduction of the digital subscriber line (DSL). It represented a big technological breakthrough in terms of raw speed. These faster speeds also changed how people could use the Internet because many of today’s common applications would be unusable at analog modem and ISDN speeds.
