Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) follows some ideas similar to both Frame Relay and Ethernet WANs. However, like Ethernet WANs, many types of MPLS WAN services exist, so to nail one down, just to get the general idea, this section talks about one specific use of MPLS, called MPLS VPNs.
MPLS VPN services follow a familiar private WAN model, with a customer connecting sites to an MPLS cloud, and the cloud forwarding data to all that customer’s sites connected to the cloud. To keep the data private, as usual, for two unrelated customers A and B, MPLS promises not to forward A’s data to B’s routers and vice versa.
