Chapter 4. Fundamentals of IPv4 Addressing and Routing
The TCP/IP network layer (Layer 3) defines how to deliver IP packets over the entire trip, from the original device that creates the packet to the device that needs to receive the packet. That process requires cooperation between several different jobs and concepts on a number of devices. This chapter begins with an overview of all these cooperating functions, and then it dives into more detail about each area, as follows:
IP routing: The process of hosts and routers forwarding IP packets (Layer 3 PDUs), while relying on the underlying LANs and WANs to forward the bits.
