4-4. Managing Administrative Sessions

Administrators and firewall users can open interactive sessions with a firewall using any of the following methods:

  • A terminal emulator connected to the console port

  • Telnet

  • SSH

  • Web-based management applications such as PDM or ASDM

The following sections provide information about the configuration and use of these methods.

Console Connection

Most Cisco firewall and security appliances have a physical console connection that can be used to access a user interface. The console port is an asynchronous serial interface operating at 9600 baud. Because of its relatively slow speed, the console should be used only to initially configure the firewall or to access it over an out-of-band connection as a last resort.
