It's Not Coming—It's Here

Do you know how much Open Source is currently in use in your organization? Notice I didn't ask “if” you have any. It is there, and no matter how closely you're watching, there's more than you think.

If you are running any variation of Linux, such as RedHat, SuSE, Mandrake, or BSD, you're using Open Source. If you have Apache in your Web environment, you're using Open Source. According to the April 2003 review by Netcraft,[1] which scanned 40 million public-facing Web sites, 63 percent of those sites were using Apache. A survey by that same organization run in April 2005 showed the market share now at 69 percent—of over 62 million servers.
