Conclusions

At the time of this writing, we're about 15 years into the data warehousing/business intelligence “modern era” that began in the 1989 to 1990 timeframe. On the one hand, these disciplines have certainly proven themselves to be more than passing fads like so many now-faded technology “movements.” Still, as noted at the outset of this chapter, too many of these environments do little other than produce a lot of reports but very little timely, actionable, high-value insight.
