Most Common Performance Challenges

Surprising as it may seem, the Internet is still run by humans, and most major issues and outages can be traced back to human or procedural error. The major challenges to running applications with high performance requirements over the Internet, however, are more technical in nature. There are several technical challenges; we concentrate on LAN–WAN mismatch, Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), and Transport Control Protocol (TCP).

LAN–WAN Mismatch

In 1997 the most common LAN port was 10 Mbps, and in less than 5 years 100 Mbps port was the norm. Before long, 1,000 Mbps will be the norm on corporate LANs. Meanwhile, the Internet utilizes OC48, OC192, and now even OC768.^[1] The challenge occurs between the corporate ...
