Analysis of Success

It would be too easy to declare the CIO Institute a success simply on the basis of its growth rate, particularly during a challenging economic period. However, CoP researcher Etienne Wenger and colleagues have articulated seven principles for successful CoPs (Wenger 2002):

  1. Design for evolution.

  2. Open a dialogue between inside and outside.

  3. Invite different levels of participation.

  4. Develop public and private spaces.

  5. Focus on value.

  6. Combine familiarity and excitement.

  7. Create a rhythm for the community.

It is worthwhile, therefore, to briefly analyze the CIO Institute with respect to these seven dimensions.
