Introduction

A community of practice (CoP) can be described as “a group of people who are brought together by a desire to learn more about a common class of problems, opportunities, and their possible solution” (Lane 2003). One such example is the Silicon Valley's CIO group described in this book's predecessor, CIO Wisdom. The CIO Institute is another CoP for senior IT professionals in the Greater Philadelphia Metropolitan Area.

In this chapter we review the history, mission, and operational details of the CIO Institute. It is hoped that this description will help to archive the group's history, illustrate best practices, and provide guidance to others who seek to build a similar CoP.
