Color Printing
Negative is printed either on a continuous contact printer or on a step printer. The step printer works somewhat like a projector in that the movement is intermittent. Registration is achieved through register pins, which allows several passes to be made, as may be the case with black-and-white separation negatives.
Additive and Subtractive Printing
A printer must control the red, green, and blue components of the white-light source to achieve correct density and color balance. Two methods of control are commonly used: additive and subtractive printing. In a subtractive printer, color balance is achieved by inserting color correcting filters in the light path between the light source and the printing aperture.
