Failed Humor

I once sat on a panel discussion at a conference for non-games people attempting to learn more about entertainment software. These were big-media people, people with lots of money to throw around, and they were deadly serious. The moderator had asked me how I wished to be introduced, and I replied that he could present me as “Zee Greatest Game Designer in Zee Universe.” He smilingly agreed to indulge me. But when the time came to introduce me, he mistakenly used “The Greatest Game Designer in The Universe.” Worse, nobody laughed; the room was full of the sound of scribbling from people dutifully noting my official title.

Attempting to salvage the joke, I leaned forward to the microphone and corrected him, “That's 'Zee Greatest Game ...
