Zoom versus Prime Lenses

Can one lens do it all for you?

At one time, all lenses were one focal length. If you wanted 100mm and 200mm, you had to buy two lenses. Zoom lenses changed that dramatically because one lens could cover multiple focal lengths. That gave photographers more flexibility with fewer lenses. But single focal length lenses, also called prime lenses, still have some advantages that can be worth considering for certain photographic needs.
