Abstract:

This chapter tries to answer two questions: what does China’s stock market look like, and why is it here? It introduces the structure of China’s stock market. The evolution paths and latest performances of the markets are described. The relationship between China’s economic growth and its stock market development is analyzed. The chapter also tries to explain why China’s stock market performs poorly and why China’s sustainable economic growth is not reflected in its stock market performance. It is argued that China’s stock market is distorted and has more of a financing function than an investment function.
