The Rise of MMORPGs

The first computer game was created in 1952, when A. S. Douglas developed Tic-Tac-Toe for the Electronic Delay Storage Automatic Calculator (EDSAC), a British computer. Today, there are many kinds of computer games, ranging from stand-alone games on a PC (think Pacman) to massively multiplayer online games (think World of Warcraft), and everything in between (think online poker). More than 10 million people play massively multiplayer online games (MMOs) worldwide in 2006, and the number is doubling every year. The analyst firm IDG estimates that 2.9 million people in the United States actively subscribe to MMOs.
