International Years are special events declared by the United Nations General Assembly to draw worldwide focus and action to particular causes. The United Nations has declared three International Years for 2014.

The International Year of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) was declared to assist the more than 50 island nations with fragile ecosystems and limited resources, especially to create awareness and devise strategies for adapting to climate change as part of a broader framework of sustainable development.
