Temperature programmed desorption is known by many names, including TPD, thermal desorption spectroscopy, and flash filament desorption.1, 2 In temperature programmed desorption, the temperature of a solid sample with gas adsorbed onto the surface or absorbed into the bulk is heated to temperatures sufficiently high that the gas desorbs into a vacuum. By calibrating the volume and pressure change of the vacuum system, the volume of gas desorbed can be determined and equated with the amount of adsorbed or absorbed gas.
