Abstract

Coded modulation is a subject treating the joint design of coding and modulation toward bandwidth-efficient transmission. The problem is basically in the code design for multilevel signal sets using binary codes on which design methodology is well established. In this chapter, we give an overview on coded modulation techniques including trellis coded modulation, multilevel coding and multistage decoding, and bit-interleaved coded modulation. Recent developments based on turbo coding and/or iterative decoding are also reviewed.
