Sequels to successful, moderately successful, and sometimes downright awful games are a staple of the game industry (and many other industries, for that matter). While players bemoan their very existence, saying that there’s no innovation or original mechanics in today’s video games, there’s a very good reason why publishers still order, ship, and sell sequels: because gamers buy them, no matter what they say.

Psychonauts by DoubleFine Productions was an incredibly innovative title. So was Katamari Damacy. Both products were praised as “sleeper hits,” the polite way of saying, “They should have sold more.” ...
