This book is about an investment medium known as contracts for difference (CFDs). CFDs are part of a wider group of investment products known as derivatives. These are so called because their value derives from the movement in price of an underlying asset or security. Apart from CFDs, which are relatively recent in origin, other derivatives include venerable products like futures and options, which have existed for centuries in one form or another, and spread betting and warrants.
