Chapter 10. Failover

Failover provides redundancy in the event of a hardware or software failure. There are two types of failover:

  • Hardware failover

  • Stateful failover

Either of these methods provides redundancy, but the difference between them is that hardware failover will drop the user’s connections when a failover occurs. This means that the user must reconnect. This type of connection is provided by a serial cable if you have a PIX or a LAN connection on either the PIX or the ASA. With stateful failover, the user connections will remain active. This is provided by a stateful failover LAN link. The stateful LAN link and the LAN connection used as the failover link can be the same LAN interface.
