This appendix presents an overview of configuring standard and extended IP access lists in Cisco IOS Software. This appendix is included in this book because many Cisco security features in Cisco IOS Software use standard or extended IP access lists, and you might need a refresher or reference on access list fundamentals.

An IP access list is a sequential collection of permit and deny conditions that apply to IP addresses and optionally to IP protocols and TCP and UDP ports. Access lists permit or deny packets from entering or leaving specified interfaces. Cisco IOS Software supports the following types of access lists for IP:
