Chapter 2. Network Address Translation

This chapter looks at Network Address Translation (NAT) and how it is implemented on the Router platforms in IOS.

NAT is an old and established technology that has been around for many years. It is fair to say that virtually all connections to the public Internet will be via a device running some form of NAT. This is true from the smallest home router to the largest corporate perimeter router. Originally designed as a way to preserve the IP addressing scheme of the Internet, NAT has evolved into a mainstream feature.
