Multihoming Connections to the Internet

Today, most organizations have one or more connections to the Internet. When a company connects two or more connections to the Internet, the BGP connection between the company and the ISP is termed a multihomed connection. Connections can be to the same ISP; however, typically, for redundancy, they are connected to two different ISPs.

This presents a problem because, in practice, two or more connections provide the same BGP routing information, and the BGP network designer must ensure that the ISPs do not use the company's network as a transit, specific routing information is not received through their Internet connection, and only a default route is accepted.
