Chapter 4. Wireless Regulation Bodies, Standards, and Certifications

THE CCNA WIRELESS EXAM TOPICS COVERED IN THIS CHAPTER ARE:

  • Describe WLAN fundamentals

    • Describe wireless regulatory bodies, standards and certifications (FCC, ETSI, 802.11a/b/g/n, WiFi Alliance)

    • Describe frame types (associated/unassociated, management, control, data)

    • Describe the impact of various wireless technologies (Bluetooth, WiMAX, ZigBee, cordless phone)

Wireless Regulation Bodies, Standards, and Certifications

The act of sending information through wireless devices implies the required use of the RF spectrum. Although countries have their own rules about which transmit power they allow within specific frequencies, it follows that vendors must use a common set of protocols that ensure interoperability in order to send information. So clearly you need to be familiar with the specific bodies that regulate use of the wireless spectrum as well as the organization that creates the protocols used in wireless networks. It's also imperative to be savvy about the organization that ensures those protocols are implemented the same way among all vendors for the sake of interoperability.

Later on in this chapter, I'll cover the data, management, and control frames used within IEEE wireless networks, and we'll conclude by exploring the various non-IEEE standards and their effect on our IEEE wireless networks you'll see presently installed all over the world.
