Securing the Control Plane

Protection of the control plane of a network device is critical because the control plane ensures that the management (discussed in Chapter 11, “Securing the Management Plane on Cisco IOS Devices”) and data (discussed in Chapter 12, “Securing the Data Plane in IPv6”) planes are maintained and operational. If the control plane were to become unstable during a security incident, it can be impossible for you to recover the stability of the network.
