Understanding the Data Plane

This section covers the methods available for implementing policy related to traffic allowed through (transit traffic) network devices.

For the data plane, this discussion concerns traffic that is going through your network device rather than to a network device. This is traffic from a user going to a server, and the router is just acting as a forwarding device. This is the data plane. Table 10-4 describes some of the prevalent ways to control the data plane (which may be implemented on an IOS router).
