Certificate Authorities
A certificate authority is a computer or entity that creates and issues digital certificates. Inside of a digital certificate is information about the identity of a device, such as its IP address, fully qualified domain name (FQDN), and the public key of that device. The CA takes requests from devices that supply all of that information (including the public key generated by the computer that is making the request) and generates a digital certificate, which the CA assigns a serial number to and signs the certificate with its own digital signature (the CA’s signature).
