In this chapter I’ll cover IP addressing and the different classes of IP addresses used in networks today.
Being familiar with the various flavors of IPv4 address types is vital to understanding IP addressing. So is mastering subnetting and being savvy on Variable Length Subnet Masks (VLSMs). I promise you'll understand everything you absolutely must know before we leave the base camp of IPv4 to begin trekking into the fascinating world of Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) toward the end of this chapter. Once in that realm, I'll give you a tour of IPv6 features and benefits and then we'll get into dissecting the nuts and bolts of IPv6 addressing itself. After you complete this chapter, I'm certain you’ll come to realize that IPv6 just isn't as horrible as many people make it out to be!
