What Is Power Capping?

The Cisco UCS chassis with four power supplies has a maximum power limit of approximately 5000 watts. Cisco UCS blade servers can draw varying power depending on the configuration and utilization of that blade server; typically, the allowance for a half-width blade server is approximately 550 watts. With newer, faster Cisco UCS blades, such as B230 M2 and B440 M2, the blade power requirement is between 600–800 watts, depending on configuration and utilization.

Hence, Cisco UCS provides the option to manage the overall power consumption through power capping to share the power draw between blade servers utilizing power management policies and priorities.
