Understanding Server Processor Numbering
In the server class microprocessor family, you’re most likely familiar with Intel stickers, nameplates advertising Pentium and Xeon-based servers. These are marketing terms. The corresponding actual microprocessor architecture of these chips has different code names.
At the time of writing this chapter, the latest server-class microprocessor architecture was code named Ivy Bridge, which is part of the Sandy Bridge microprocessor architecture by Intel.
