Cisco UCS I/O Module Architecture

The Cisco UCS I/O module is analogous to a line card on a switch, but in this case, it’s completely “unmanaged.” This module facilitates blade connectivity to Cisco UCS Fabric Interconnects. Cisco I/O module settings are pushed transparently via the UCS Manager (it is not a point of management).

Tip

In a Cisco UCS blade server chassis, to start configurations, you can install one IOM as a minimum. However, it gives you only partial bandwidth, no redundancy. If you do so, be sure to install it on the “left” side of the chassis (Slot A).
