What Is a Socket?

In the server-computing world, you will hear reference to terminologies such as socket, CPU, core, and hyperthreading. A socket is a reference to a physical microprocessor receptacle, which is visible and present on your server motherboard. It is also referred to as the physical CPU. Figure 13-2 shows a CPU socket in a Cisco UCS B-series blade server.
