Due to the lack of Ethernet protocol support for transport characteristics required for successful storage-area network implementation, part of the Unified Fabric solution, consolidation of network and storage traffic over the same Ethernet network requires special considerations. Specifically, it requires the capability to provide lossless traffic delivery, as well as necessary bandwidth and traffic priority services. The lack of those characteristics poses no concerns for the network traffic; however, to make Ethernet a viable transport for storage traffic, Ethernet protocol must be enhanced.
