Certain mechanisms for Layer 2 extension across data centers, or in some cases across PODs of the same data center, introduce challenges that can inhibit their practical use. For example, Spanning Tree Protocol–based extension topologies do not scale well and can cause cascading failures that can propagate beyond the boundaries of a single availability domain. They fall short of making use of multipathing topologies by logically blocking redundant links. A more efficient protocol is needed to leverage all available paths for traffic forwarding, as well as provide intelligent traffic load-balancing across the data center interconnect links.
