Tape Storage Virtualization

Tape storage virtualization can be divided into two categories: the tape media virtualization and the tape drive and library virtualization (VTL). Tape media virtualization resolves the problem of underutilized tape media; it saves tapes, tape libraries, and floor space. With tape media virtualization the amount of mounts are reduced.

A virtual tape library (VTL) is used typically for backup and recovery purposes. A VTL presents a storage component (usually hard disk storage) as tape libraries or tape drives for use with existing backup software.
