Control Plane
The control plane maintains the information necessary for the data plane to operate. This information is collected and computed using complex protocols and algorithms. The control plane of a network node can speak to the control plane of its neighbor to share routing and switching information. This information is then processed to create tables that help the data plane to operate. Routing protocols such as OSPF, EIGRP, or BGP are examples of control plane protocol.
