First Hop Redundancy Protocol Isolation

Another capability introduced by OTV is to filter the First Hop Redundancy Protocol (FHRP—HSRP, VRRP, and so on) messages across the overlay. This is necessary to localize the gateway at a given site and optimize the outbound traffic from that site. Because we have the same VLANs exist in multiple sites, if we don’t filter the hello messages between the sites it will lead to the election of a single default gateway for a given VLAN that will lead to a suboptimal path for the outbound traffic.
