Multihoming is a native function in OTV where two or more OTV edge devices provide a LAN extension for a given site. Having more than one OTV edge device at a given site, because OTV doesn’t send spanning tree BPDUs across the overlay, can lead to an end-to-end loop.

To be able to support multihoming, and to avoid creating an end-to-end loop, an Authoritative Edge Device (AED) concept is introduced. The AED role is elected on a per-VLAN basis at a given site.
