ARP Optimization

ARP optimization is one of the native features in OTV that helps to reduce the amount of traffic sent across the transport infrastructure. When a device in one of the data centers, such as Site A, sends out an ARP request, which is a broadcast message, this request is sent across the OTV overlay to Site B. The ARP request eventually reaches the destination machine, which in turn creates an ARP reply message and sends it back to the originating host. When a subsequent ARP request originates to the same IP address in Site A, it will not be forwarded across the OTV overlay but will be locally answered by the OTV edge device.
