What Is FabricPath?

Cisco FabricPath is an innovation to build a simplified and scalable Layer 2 fabric. It combines the benefits of Layer 3 routing with the advantages of Layer 2 switching. Layer 3 routing provides scalability, multipathing, fast convergence, and shortest path selection from any host to any other host in the network. However, Layer 3 creates network segmentation, which makes it less flexible for workload mobility within a virtualized data center. FabricPath brings the stability and performance of Layer 3 routing to the Layer 2 switched network and builds a highly resilient, massively scalable, and flexible Layer 2 fabric.
