Ethernet LAN Media and Cable Lengths

When designing a LAN, an engineer must consider the length of each cable run and then find the best type of Ethernet and cabling type that supports that length of cable. For example, inside a data center, the cables often only run inside a rack to a switch at the top of the rack (often called a top-of-rack or ToR switch). In contrast, if a company leases space in five buildings in the same office park, the campus LAN links might have to run several hundred or even thousands of meters. The network engineer needs to be able to figure out how long the cables between the buildings need to be and then pick the right type of Ethernet.

The IEEE has kept the UTP Ethernet standards consistent in terms of cable length ...
