Ethernet Devices

10BASE-5 and 10BASE-2 did not use a networking device or hardware other than the NICs in the end-user devices. That is, the Ethernet consists of the NICs and the cable. Later Ethernet LAN technologies, including today’s current technology, use several types of devices to create the Ethernet LAN. The next few topics examine some of the device types used to create different types of Ethernet LANs over the history of Ethernet, specifically repeaters, hubs, bridges, and switches.
