Switching Logic

LAN switches offer many functions and features, but the most basic features are to connect devices to create the LAN and to forward data through the LAN. This second of three major headings, although short, discusses how a LAN switch forwards data.

Note that most modern LAN switches, including most in the Cisco Nexus model series, support two general types of forwarding: Layer 2 switching and Layer 3 switching (also known as multilayer switching). Layer 2 switching means that the switch uses OSI Layer 2 (data link) logic when forwarding data, whereas Layer 3 switching means that the switch uses OSI Layer 3 (network) logic. In effect, Layer 3 switching is just IP routing as done on a device that also happens to be a LAN switch. ...
