When you are working with a traditional wired network, you connect your computer to a network switch to interconnect all devices on your network. Or, you use crossover network cables to directly connect two computers. In the case of wireless networking, you still have two choices: You can connect two devices directly or you can connect your devices using a central device, mainly an access point. These two methods are referred to as ad hoc mode when the devices are directly connected or infrastructure mode when using an AP. This chapter takes a look at both of these options.
