IP Accounting Overview

IP accounting can provide you with basic IP accounting functions, such as seeing the number of bytes and packets that are switched through the Cisco IOS Software based on the source and destination IP address. One limitation of this is that only IP traffic that is using the device as a transition point can be measured and then, only on the outbound direction; traffic that is generated by the software or that terminates in the software is not included in the accounting statistics. Two accounting databases are used to maintain accurate accounting totals: the active and the checkpointed database.
