Integrated IS-IS Overview

Cisco adapted the Open System Interconnection (OSI) IS-IS Protocol into a protocol that is capable of carrying IP prefixes in addition to CLNS routing information. You might know this protocol as either Integrated IS-IS or Dual IS-IS. Most routing protocols use a “ships in the night” approach in their operation, meaning that they only work with a single protocol, but Integrated IS-IS overcomes this by providing concurrent processing of reachability information for multiple network layer protocols.
