Summary

RIP is the oldest routing protocol out there, but it has proven resiliency. It is still widely used and is an integral part of networking. The CCIE Security lab exam is not based solely on RIP, but a good understanding of RIP theory and a knowledge of configuration are required.

In this chapter, you learned some of the most vital RIP concepts such as the mechanics of RIPv1 and RIPv2, configuration tasks for basic and advanced RIP networking, and some of the security-related issues, such as RIP authentication and RIP router-to-PIX communication.
