Frame Relay Overview

Frame Relay is an industry-standard, switched data link layer protocol that is capable of handling multiple virtual circuits (VCs) using High-Level Data Link Control (HDLC) encapsulation between Frame Relay–capable devices. Figure 5-1 illustrates an ANSI T1.618 Frame Relay frame.

The nine fields of the Frame Relay frame are as follows:

  • Flag— Used to identify the beginning and end of the frame.

  • Data-Link Connection Identifier (DLCI)— Identifies the path through the network to a specific destination.
