Using Hardware Settings to Recover a Password

A few of the older Cisco devices or modules, such as the Catalyst 1200 series of switches, require you to modify hardware settings to recover a password. There are two ways to accomplish this:

  • By shorting the jumper settings by hand

  • By changing the jumper settings through software

The following sections cover the steps necessary to accomplish both of these methods.

Manually Shorting Jumper Settings

The following procedure causes your device to fail and stop running software. This is similar to accessing ROMMON mode on a router. Use these steps when manually shorting jumper settings:
